CDBG-DR Public Comment Forum – S Jefferson Ave Sidewalk Project
The Town of West Jefferson is asking for public comments on the submission of a grant application to support a sidewalk and multi-use path project described below. The application is for funds from the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) grant Commercial District Revitalization program.
The application will be for funds used to upgrade the existing sidewalk along the west side of S Jefferson Ave to a more functional multi-use path (MUP). An 8-foot MUP is proposed for the 1.2-mile corridor between Beaver Creek School Rd and East Buck Mountain Rd. Additionally, intersection improvements will be included to provide pedestrian accommodations at two intersections, Beaver Creek School Road/South Jefferson Avenue and East Buck Mountain Road/South Jefferson Avenue. The planned MUP will increase the accessibility and safety of the sidewalk corridor compared to its current condition. The proposed MUPs will provide bike and pedestrian infrastructure from Downtown West Jefferson to commercial areas outside the center of Town. The Town has identified this area as a primary candidate for bike and pedestrian infrastructure. This project would connect to the existing downtown sidewalk infrastructure at the East Buck Mountain Rd intersection.
To support this project, the application will be requesting a total of $5,604,530.99. As the project is adjacent to a census tract with a low- to moderate-income population percentage of 56.4, it will benefit low- to moderate-income persons by providing accessibility through alternate forms of transportation to a commercial area of West Jefferson that includes essential services such as grocery, pharmacy, and other services.
